Letter to Laurinburg Exchange

Dump discussion important
by Jim Johnston

To the editor

I was reading your article on the county commissioners meeting and one would think litter was the only subject discussed. There were a number of subjects that were not covered: FY 2008-2009 audit, Cooperative Extension Annual Report and the proposed mega dump. I believe all these subjects are important for your readers.

In the last meeting I addressed the Commissioners and asked questions concerning the proposed mega dump and nothing was reported. Evidently the reporter felt this was not of importance. In the meeting on Monday, there was a healthy and enlightening discussion by the Commissioners concerning the proposed mega dump. Yet again nothing was reported in Tuesday or Wednesday’s paper.

For your readers’ information, there was discussion concerning the dump that included increasing fees for the existing dump. Researching the new landfill has cost taxpayers over $14,000 so far and it was estimated that the cost to build the proposed new mega dump would cost taxpayers $3 million dollars. Shouldn’t this information be reported to the citizens of Scotland County?

Commissioner Bob Davis asked the other commissioners why they made a promise to the citizens of Scotland County a few years ago that if the state would take over the payment of Medicaid, there would be no need for a mega dump. Our local state legislators did a lot of hard work on behalf of the citizens of Scotland County to eliminate the Medicaid burden on our County taxes. The other Commissioners were silent because they knew they have misled the citizens. There was applause from the audience after Commissioner Davis’ comments.

I am not asking your paper to show favoritism towards either the pro or anti mega dump sides. I would like your paper to print the whole story, not ignore that there exists in Scotland County a strong movement again for a mega dump, regardless of previous promises most commissioners made.

As the elections heat up this year, the proposed mega dump will become one of the major topics for Laurinburg, Scotland County and the surrounding area. If your paper will not cover this important topic, I am sure other media outlets in the region will.
