History
Scotland County Megadump History Waste Management brought a proposal to host a landfill in Scotland County in 2005 that would have brought in garbage from Florida to Maine. By early 2006, two other waste industry companies had submitted requests for a Host Agreement. At that time, five or six other Mega-Landfills were proposed throughout the state. In 2006 the NC Legislature put a moratorium on landfill permitting. With help from our three NC legislators, The Solid Waste Management Act of 2007 was passed, which changed the NC Statutes related to landfill permitting. In March of 2007, the Scotland County Commissioners placed a hold on the Host Agreement proposal with Waste Management. Before the Host Agreement was placed on hold, the county had spent over $200,000.00 on the proposed site in the Sandhills. The money was used to purchase an option for the land, for consultant and attorney fees, and for site testing. The documentation below provides a history of events and documents related to the proposed Mega-Dump site in the Sandhills.
