Alternatives to Land Filling:
Scotland County Of Tomorrow hosted an event, “A New Approach to Solid Waste,” in March of 2010. President Neil Seldman of the Institute for Self Reliance, a national nonprofit organization, presented a discussion of "alternatives" to the issue of solid waste disposal in Scotland County.
Instead of making our county a waste centroid for garbage, we could establish a resource recovery system, which will bring valuable raw materials to our economy. This translates into new jobs, new small businesses and an expanded tax base. By looking at the recycling and composting alternatives, more money in host community fees would come to the county. The added jobs and businesses would be a wonderful bonus for local economy.
All around the US small and large cities and counties are adopting recycling and composting and creating long-term sustainable systems. As the value of the materials in the waste stream becomes more apparent, less and less will be put in to landfills. Preventing waste and expanding reduce, recycling and composting programs is the wave of the future.
