The Waste Management application on file in Scotland County allows a mega-dump that would:

• BE ONE OF THE TEN LARGEST MEGA-DUMPS IN THE UNITED STATES.

• TAKE TRASH FROM FIFTY-ONE MILLION (51,000,000) PEOPLE, FROM FL, GA, SC, NC, VA, TN, WASHINGTON, DC

• TAKE 5,000 TONS (10,000,000 POUNDS) OF TRASH PER DAY.

• BE AS TALL AS A 20 TO 28 STORY BUILDING.

• ALLOW ANY WASTES THAT MEET THE DENR'S DEFINITIONS OF COMMERCIAL, HOUSEHOLD OR INDUSTRIAL SOLID WASTE.

• LOCATE ANYWHERE IN THE COUNTY.

• CLOSE PART OF SNEADS GROVE ROAD (preferred location).

• BRING 450 GARBAGE TRUCKS AND GARBAGE BY RAILROAD THROUGH SCOTLAND AND SURROUNDING COUNTIES.

SCOT is a grassroots organization formed to highlight the potential for desirable growth in Scotland County, and to emphasize that true economic opportunity would be undermined by short sighted short term financial gain and long term costs of a mega-dump.  We are a chapter of the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League.
Our sister organization in Richmond County is Save Our Abundant Resources. SCOT and SOAR work closely together to protect both counties from a mega-landfill.
