Laurinburg Exchange Editorial

To the editor:

A few months ago, I wrote a letter to this paper criticizing the lack of coverage to the growing mega dump investigation by our county government. Your paper published my letter and the coverage of this issue increased. I appreciate your coverage of the proposed mega dump in the last few months. Your reporting was unbiased and very informative to the voters of Scotland County for the primary elections last month.

In the last county commissioners meeting, the commissioners voted unanimously to discontinue any plan to put a mega dump in Scotland County. Bob Davis presented a resolution that will have county government cease all efforts to plan or locate a facility within Scotland County for the disposition of waste generated on a regional, multi-state or national basis, terminate efforts to condemn property near its existing landfill, stop paying outside engineering, legal and other companies involved in the plans for the disposition of waste and to notify all waste management companies that we are no longer interested in their waste.

The resolution was approved unanimously by the commissioners.

Hopefully this will be the last we hear of mega dumps and Scotland County in the same breath. I trust all previous agreements made by the county officials with waste companies have been voided and destroyed.

We have the opportunity for a new beginning for Scotland County. Let us focus on the developing the airport as an inland port, developing 21st century technology and explore other positive alternatives. The dark cloud of the mega dump has been lifted from this county, let us come together and work for a brighter future.

Jim Johnston
